We are very happy and proud to announce that on June 16, 2015 the advisor of the University of Latvia SPIE student chapter, professor Janis Spigulis was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia for his research on atomic spectroscopy, optoelectronics and fiber optics, as well as for establishing a new research field - Biophotonics - in Latvia.

Professor Janis Spigulis celebrates his 65th birthday this year. He is currently the head of Biophotonics Laboratory of the Institute of Atomic Physics and Spectroscopy. In 1994 he founded the International Society for Applied Optics of Latvia which was also the beginning of SPIE student chapter in Latvia. Under his supervision, 8 students have defended their PhD thesis since year 2007 and 4 are still in the process, all of them members of the UL SPIE and 4 of them former presidents of the UL SPIE. Professor Janis Spigulis has not only started research on Biophotonics in Latvia, but also helped young scientists to share these ideas to the public, to school kids and to be a part of the international optics society.
