Investigation of the working principles and interaction mechanisms of neurons is of profound interest to the science community at large since they make up the brain, and the brain is a great thing to have (an opinion expressed by the brain itself). There already exist various techniques to monitor the brain activity but most of them either work in the macro-scale (f-MRI) or are not scalable narrowing the range of possible applications.
